Our research focuses on understanding and manipulating the conserved pathways used by organisms to defend themselves against damaging environmental agents. We use quantitative techniques in the fields of biophysics, biochemistry and microbiology to study structural dynamics, macromolecular interactions, and physiological responses to environmental stressors.
We are also using tools of synthetic biology to engineer novel functions into microorganisms. Our focus is on the production of improved biomaterials and the development of new tools for 3D patterning of bacteria. This approach will lead to tunable fabrication of materials in a simple, environmentally-friendly manner.
